Ronnie James Dio – Love Is All

I’m genuinely saddened by the death of rock vocalist and songwriter Ronnie Dio over the weekend.  I lost count of how many times I’ve seen him perform and he never gave a bad performance.  Ozzy Osbourne sums it up simply:

Metal has truly lost one of its greatest voices.

As well as being a great singer he almost single-handedly created a genre of heavy metal which relied heavily on gothic imagery and satanic references, and introduced the satanic two finger salute rock standard.  Put simply, he helped formulate the black metal cliché.  Despite being slightly reminiscent of the Spinal Tap look, it made for awesome live shows.

Rather than post one of his metal tracks from his days with Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio or the other rock bands he graced, I thought this track from Roger Glover’s Butterfly Ball rock opera superbly showcases Dio’s spectacular voice.  He rocked.
